Incipio Feather review

We review the Incipio Feather for iPhone, a lightweight case to soften the blow from bumps and scratches

Published on Oct 18, 2009

iPhone cases come in all shapes and sizes - there are heavy duty ones to bulk up the iPhone, leather pouches that protect the screen while not in use and ultra-light cases that stop the rear getting scratched.

Incipio's Feather case falls into the last category.

At just 1mm thick, made of a soft touch material, it won't weigh your iPhone down at all. In fact, you won't even detect it when you hold the iPhone to your ear.

Incipio's Feather case is simple to fit to the iPhone. There aren't any pieces to fit together, it's just one piece that clips snuggly to the iPhone. This means there's no danger of it falling off in your bag.

You'll find a screen protector also comes in the box, and this proved more problematic to fit than the case itself - beware of bubbles appearing underneath the plastic. We disposed of the screen protector after a couple of week's use as it became tatty.

During testing, we found the case to be such a tight fit that despite spilling a drink over our iPhone by accident, the only inlet point between the case and the iPhone was around the mute button on the side.

The case also lines up well with all the features you'll need access to, including the 3.5mm headphone jack, dock connector and SIM card port, although we did find that the hole for the camera was ever-so-slightly off centre. Nothing to ruin the experience though, or to stop us taking photos.s

One problem we found with the Incipio Feather was that its soft touch coating began to rub off after a couple of weeks fitted on the iPhone.

Although our iPhone does put up with a lot of wear and tear, it's a shame to see the case degrades so quickly. The soft touch coating also picks up dirt and became discoloured after a while.

Where the Incipio Feather does come up trumps is protecting the corners and metal surround of the iPhone. If you own an iPhone, you may have experienced scratches or dents appearing if you fdrop it. After all, it's sod's law that the iPhone will land on a corner when dropped. Thankfully, Incipio's case seemed to be robust, despite us dropping our iPhone a number of times onto hard surfaces, including tarmac on one occasion.

The Incipio Feather may well be light and seemingly flimsy, but it does a very good job of protecting the iPhone from drops and scratches. Although it's not waterproof, and doesn't claim to be, you will find that it can stand up to light liquid spills too.

There are other, more hardy cases on the market at lower pricepoints, but Incipio's Feather makes for a great chioce of case if you want to spice up its look while protecting from any light damage.
