3 has announced that the iPhone will be coming to its network in 2010

3 has plans to start distributing the Apple iPhone from next year.

No deal is yet in place, but 3’s Kevin Russell sees it as a key goal for 2010, saying 'At the moment, we don't have the iPhone. We don't really have any smartphones but if we improve our range of smartphones and introduce the iPhone then our data traffic will grow massively. Our take up of web services is already massive.'

Mobile News reported Russell’s views on the device as he talked at the Westminster eForum. The match of 3 and the iPhone seems like an intuitive one, when the network has arguably more of a focus on affordable Mobile Internet services than any other UK carrier at present.

However, it may have trouble grabbing a significant audience when, by the time the iPhone becomes available on O2, many current prospective iPhone buyers will already be locked into lengthy new contracts with Orange and T-Mobile.
