Find out how to download additional Widgets to make the most of your Samsung Omnia HD with this user guide

The Samsung Omnia HD's huge, lush screen makes it great for things that are beyond the basics usually associated with mobile phone functionality. To make the most of your Omnia HD, you should really check out the full roster of Widgets available for the device.

Using Widgets, you can view content, check information and get online updates - all straight from small apps on the standby screen. The Pixon has a good selection of apps available in a Widgets toolbar that, thanks to its touchscreen control, you can easily drag and drop on to the home screen. Once there, you can use the key functions quickly and easily any time you want from standby with a tap of your finger.

You can see a list of the Widgets available by pressing an arrowed tab towards the top left of the display (Figure 1). A column of small icons represents the widgets, which can be pulled with your finger onto the main screen. It's easy to do (see our related article here for more details).

But as well as the onboard widgets, Samsung offers the facility to browse and download more over the air for free, straight to the handset. These can be downloaded quickly and easily to customise your phone (note: you may be charged for the data by your mobile network operator - so check your data plan).

It's simple to do - here's how:

Downloading new widgets

To get the 'More Widget' widgets download application onscreen, open the widgets toolbar. Press the arrowed tab towards the top of the display to open this (Figure 1).

Scroll through the Widgets toolbar by dragging or swiping your finger up until you see the icon labelled Widget (Figure 2).

Put your fingertip on the Widget icon and drag it onto the main part of the display. Take your finger off the screen to drop it in place (Figure 3). You can leave the toolbar open, or close it if you prefer by tapping the arrowed tab.

Press the More Widget panel that's now on the standby screen. As it opens up it will go online to refresh the list of downloadable widgets (Figure 4).

A list of available widgets appears (Figure 5). You can scroll up or down this list by pressing the arrowed up or down keys at the bottom of the More Widget panel (Figure 6).

Alternatively, if you're after a particular type of widget or know the name of the app, you can use the the search panel at the top of the widget panel. Press the search panel, and the keyboard or numberpad appears (Figure 7). Type in the search word and press the magnifying glass. Search results appear, which you can scroll through using the arrows as before (Figure 8).

When you've decided on the widget you want to download, press the widget name onscreen. The phone's browser opens automatically to take you to the widget download site (Figure 9). Here you can read more about the particular widget.

To download the widget, press the Download button onscreen. Downloading begins (Figure 10).

In a few seconds a message appears to confirm that the download has been completed and the download widget activated. Press the Call End button below the display to return to the standby screen. Continue to download any further new widgets you want in the same way as above.

To see and use a new widget, open the Widgets toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab as before. Scroll through the list of widgets. Icons for new ones will now be in the toolbar (Figure 11).

Hold your finger on the icon and move as before, taking your finger off to when the widget is in position on the main part of the screen (Figure 12).

When the new widget is on the main part of the screen, press the widget to open it (Figure 13).

To get the More Widget finder, or any other widget, off the standby screen, drag and drop back onto the open toolbar in the same way as above (Figure 14).

To close the widgets toolbar, press the arrowed tab.

Running on the S60 5th Edition platform and with an 8-megapixel camera, there's plenty of high quality imaging capability and other fine software to play with.

As part of Samsung's touchscreen user interface, which also includes support for Wiidgets, the Omnia HD i8910 has a neat Photo Contacts feature, where photos on the phone can be associated with one or more contact numbers for speed dialling and messaging.

By swiping a finger from left to right on the homescreen, users can pull up the Photo Contacts menu, which is displayed as a scrollable cascade of images. You can assign numbers to boxes you can place on the image, and make calls or send messages simply by pressing them.

It's easy to set up and use – here's how...

Setting up Photo Contacts

In the homescreen (Figure 1), swipe your finger across from left to right.

In the Photo Contacts screen (Figure 2), tap the centre panel onscreen to add a new Photo Contact (alternatively, press the Add button).

A list of your photos stored on the phone is displayed (Figure 3).

Scroll up or down to locate the one you want to use. Drag your finger up or down the display, or press the sidebar and drag with your finger. When you've found the image you want to use, press it twice to select (Figure 4).

The image will be added to the Photo Contacts screen (Figure 5).

You can add further images by pressing the Add button again and repeating the procedure. The images will appear as a cascade you can scroll through by swiping your finger up or down the screen.

Once an image has been added to the Photo Contacts screen, you can assign contacts to the image. You can add just one contact or several (useful if it's a group picture or someone has multiple numbers) – the procedure is similar.

Adding contacts

Select the photo you want to use. Press the Edit button at the bottom of the screen (Figure 5).

Press the Add Area button at the bottom of the screen (Figure 6).

A small yellow box appears onscreen (Figure 7).

You can drag and drop the box anywhere on the screen, using your finger (Figure 8). You can also stretch the box in size by dragging the corner of the box (Figure 9).

Once you are happy with the size, shape and positioning of the box, press OK (Figure 10).

Options appear at the bottom of the screen (Figure 11). Press Link to phonebook.

You are taken into your Phone Contacts list (Figure 12). Scroll down or search until you find the contact you want to assign to the Photo Contacts image. Press the contact twice to select.

A Select Phone Number panel appears. If you have more than one number assigned to a contact, you can select which one you want by tapping it. Press OK (Figure 13).

The contact number is assigned to the box on your selected image, and the contact's name appears next to it (Figure 14).

You can link further numbers to the image by pressing the Add Area button, and following the same procedure outlined above. Numerous boxes with associated contact numbers can be assigned to one image (Figure 15). Be aware though, the more numbers you add to a photo, the trickier it's likely to be to accurately select the one you want when speed dialling.

When you have added all the boxes and contacts you want, press Done. You will be returned to the original Photo Contacts screen, with all your selections displayed (Figure 16).

Add more Photo Contacts to your list by pressing the Add button and repeating the procedure outlined from Figure 3 onwards. A cascade of Photo Contacts will be displayed (Figure 17).

Using Photo Contacts
Once you have saved your Photo Contacts, you can scroll through them and tap on them for quick dialling, video calling or messaging.

From the homescreen, get into the Photo Contacts screen by swiping your finger from left to right.

Once you've scrolled through and found the image you want, press the box associated with the number you want use. You are given a choice of options: Voice Call, Video Call, and Send Message (Figure 18).

Press whichever option you require and the number will be dialed or you will be taken into the new message writing screen.

We show you how

The Samsung Omnia HD i8910 is a sophisticated touchscreen S60 smartphone, with stacks of useful features and applications inside. Among its user friendly controls is a Widgets function, which enables users to open and use mini-applications for a wide number of in-phone functions and online services, straight from the phone's homescreen.

A list of Widget icons is contained in a hidden toolbar on the left of the screen. Tapping the arrowed tab on the bottom of the display opens up the toolbar, which users can then scroll with a swipe of the finger and select for display on the homescreen.

As many Widgets as you like can be displayed at the same time on the homescreen. You can also drag them about to suit the layout your prefer. Other widgets are available too - they can be added to the toolbar list by delving into the menu system. Others can be downloaded over the air too.

And Samsung has added a feature to make it easy to organise Widgets into easily viewable screens - Widget Packages. You can create up to three packages of homescreen widgets, which you can switch between with a simple press of an onscreen button – so you can see sets of related functions without them being cluttered by lots of other Widgets.

In this way, for example, you can create and view packages of, say, entertainment Widgets, organiser Widgets and online Widgets - or use any other mix of widgets you prefer. It can make using Widgets just that little bit more user-friendly than it already is.

Here we show you how to use Widgets, add new Widgets and create Widget packages...

Adding Widgets to the homescreen
It's simple to add Widgets to your homescreen. The procedure is the same, too. when you're creating Widgets Packages for one of the the alternative homescreen Widgets views (see below).

Press the arrowed tab on the bottom left of the homescreen (Figure 1).

The Widgets toolbar opens up on the left side of the screen (Figure 2).

Scroll through the Widgets toolbar to see the list of Widgets available, represented by the small icons (Figure 3). Swipe your finger up or down to quickly browse through the toolbar, or hold your finger on and drag to move more slowly.

To add a Widget to your home screen, touch and hold onscreen and drag onto the main part of the home screen. You can place the Widget wherever you want on the screen. Take your finger off to drop it in place (Figure 4).

You can drag and drop more Widgets onto the home screen. You can place as many as you want (Figure 5), move them around as much as you like, or drag them offscreen back to the bar.

Once you have selected the widgets you want to use, close the toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab on the bottom left of the display. The toolbar closes and the Widgets remain onscreen (Figure 6).

You can drag and drop the Widgets to get your preferred screen set-up (Figure 7).

To use a Widget, simply tap the icon on the homescreen to select it and press again to open. The Widget will open and you can begin to use the application or service (Figure 8).

You can change around your widget selection as often as you want to, simply by opening the toolbar and dragging and dropping icons off or on to the toolbar as desired.

Widgets Packages
There are three Widget 'Packages' you can create and view separately on the homescreen - effectively allowing you to create three individual Widget homescreens.

To switch between Widget Packages - with their separate sets of Widgets displayed on otherwise similar homescreens - simply press one of the three buttons on the black and white Widget Package icon that appears when the Widget toolbar is active (Figure 9). As you press each button, the Widget selections onscreen will alter.

As you switch between the alternative Widgets Packages, you can drag and drop Widgets from or back onto the toolbar, just as before (Figure 10).

If you want to switch to another Widgets Package view, simply open up the toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab, and select the appropriate button on the black and white Widgets Package icon. Close the toolbar and the Widgets Package you have displayed will be the one shown on your homescreen (Figure 11).

Adding more Widgets to the toolbar
In addition to the set of Widgets you can initially see in the toolbar, Widgets for other phone features can be added. These can be selected from a list of Widgets in the phone's menu system.

You can decide which Widgets are displayed on the toolbar - removing ones you don't use or adding ones you might fancy via the settings menus in the phone. Usefully, Samsung has also included a Widget for setting up Widgets on the toolbar - the icon looks like a cog with small squares next to it (Figure 12).

Drag and drop the Widgets icon onto your homescreen from the toolbar (as outlined above) to use as a shortcut to the Widgets settings menu. Once dragged onto your homescreen (Figure 13), press the icon to open up the Widgets settings menu.

Alternatively, from the homescreen, press Menu. In the main menu, press the Settings icon (Figure 14).

Press Personal (Figure 15).

Press Widgets (Figure 16). You are taken into the Widgets settings menu (Figure 17). Press Widgets.

A list appears of applications and features for which Widgets can be displayed on the toolbar - the ticked options are the ones currently shown in the toolbar (Figure 18).

Press the unticked ones you want to display, and a tick appears. Pressing a ticked option deselects it from the toolbar (Figure 19).

Scroll down the list and tick or untick as required. Press Back to return to the previous page with your selection alterations saved. Press the Call End button to go back directly to the homescreen.

Open the toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab. The amended toolbar appears, with new selections showing, and ones you've deselected omitted (Figure 20).

Drag the new Widgets you want to use onto the homescreen in the same way as before (Figure 21).

Downloading new Widgets
In addition to the pre-loaded Widget selection, you can search for and download new Widgets from Samsung. A MoreWidgets2 app Widget can be added to the toolbar from the additional Widgets menu (or it may be pre-installed on some versions of the Omnia HD i8910).

Add the MoreWidgets2 Widget to the toolbar in the way outlined above in Adding more Widgets to the toolbar.

Open the toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab.

Scroll down to select the MoreWidgets icon (Figure 22). Drag on to the homescreen. Close the toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab again.

The MoreWidgets app enables you to search for Widgets online, by Category, Latest, Most Downloaded or Top Recommended. Alternatively, you can do a word search, by tapping the bank panel and typing in a key word (Figure 23).

Press one of the search options and you will get a Select Connection request (Figure 24). Choose the internet connection you prefer to use and press.

In a few moments a list of Widgets is displayed onscreen (Figure 25). Scroll through pages of lists by using the small arrowed buttons on the bottom of the MoreWidgets panel.

Press the Widget on the list that you want to download. The phone will connect to the Samsung download site, displaying details of the selected Widget (Figure 26).

Press the Download button onscreen. Details of the download appear onscreen (Figure 27). Press OK.

Details of the file and size and progress of the download appear. You are informed when the file has been saved to Downloads (Figure 27).

The new Widget has now been added to the Widgets toolbar.

Press Close to exit and go back to the homescreen.

Open up the toolbar as before by pressing the arrowed tab.

Scroll down until you see the newly added Widget icon in the toolbar (Figure 29).

Drag and drop the new icon onto the homescreen (Figure 30). Close the toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab. You can now press the new Widget to open and use the application.
