The Samsung Tocco F480 is more limited than many mobiles when it comes to customisation. You may not be able to change the look, feel and sound of the phone in one go by changing themes, but you can still individually change the Tocco's wallpaper, ringtones and message alerts.
With a few simple button presses, it's possible to give your Tocco a fresh look and sound. And if you want to, you can effectively create you own themes by matching together suitably linked wallpapers and sounds - it's possible to use any images or music files copied to your phone or memory card to customise your ringtones and screens.
As well as a selection of pre-loaded wallpapers provided by Samsung on the Tocco, a huge variety of wallpapers are available to download free of charge from various websites, including the official Samsung Fun Club. But it's easy to create your own too, and you can use image files stored in your phone - including your photographs - which can be automatically re-formatted to fit the standby display.
As well changing wallpapers via the main menu system, you can also set up and use the Photos widget from the standby screen as an alternative quick method for swapping wallpapers. Here we show you how to change wallpapers the regular way:
How to change wallpapers
- From the standby screen, press the Menu button (Figure 1).
- In the main Menu press Settings (Figure 2).
- In the Settings menu press Display and light settings (Figure 3).
- In the Display and light settings menu, press Display settings (Figure 4).
- In the Display settings menu, press Wallpaper (Figure 5).
- Press Images (Figure 6).
- A list of images stored on the phone appears which you can scroll down (Figure 7). You can also tab across to view images on a memory card, if you have one inside the card slot.
- Top of the images list is a My Photos option, which allows you to browse through and select images you've taken with the phone's camera. If you want to install one of these photos as a wallpaper, tap the My Photos option, and then scroll down your photo list. The same procedure below is used to choose and set your image.
- Scroll down to highlight the image you want to use. Tap it onscreen, or press the Select button (Figure 8).
- The image you've selected fills the screen (Figure 9). Press Set to install it as your wallpaper or Back to return to the list of images, where you can continue to browse and view images until you find the one you want.
- Once you have selected an image and pressed Set, the standby screen wallpaper will change. Go back to the standby screen to see the new image in place (Figure 10).
If you have your mobile operator's name (or other widget) on the screen, you may want to remove it so it doesn't interfere with your wallpaper image. To do this, simply tap the small arrowed widgets toolbar tab on the left side of the display (Figure 11).
When the widgets toolbar appears down the side of the screen (Figure 12), put your finger on the operator name panel (or other widget you're trying to get rid of) and drag it across the screen into the widgets toolbar. Then take your finger off to leave it there. Tap the arrowed widgets toolbar tab to close it again (Figure 13). Your screen will now be logo free (see Figure 11).
Changing wallpapers with Photos widget shortcut
The Photo viewing widget can be a quick way to change the wallpaper, though you do have to scroll through each image individually before selecting the one you want to use. If you know which image you're after, or have a lot of photos or images to choose from, it will probably be quicker to use the method outlined above.
- From the standby screen, open up the widgets toobar by tapping on the arrowed tab towards the bottom left of the display.
- When the widgets toolbar opens (Figure 14), scroll up or down until you see the Photos widget (it's represented by a small icon of a picture with arrows on either side).
- Put your finger on the Photos widget and drag it across onto the main screen (Figure 15).
- You can scroll through images by pressing the arrows on either side of the widget - a new image will appear in the central panel each time. You can toggle between saved images and your own photos by tapping the Images/Photos button (Figure 16).
- To install the displayed image as your wallpaper, press Set. The screen wallpaper will now change (Figure 17).
- When you're finished, you can drag the widget back into the widgets toolbar (Figure 18), and close this by tapping the arrowed tab.
