As part of its refreshed TouchWiz touchscreen user interface, the Samsung Tocco F480 introduces a Widgets feature which enables users to get information and control a range of favourite applications from the standby screen with just a swipe of the finger.
The widgets feature allows you to customise the Tocco so that you can quickly pull up a selection of applications and handy functions onscreen. These widget apps, which appear in small panels onscreen, can be arranged in any way you like on your Tocco's display, using your finger to drag and drop them, so you can have several widgets active at the same time on the touchscreen. The widgets you want displayed can be selected from a pop-out widgets toolbar that appears from the side of the Tocco's display.
Widgets pre-loaded on the Tocco include: an analogue clock; music player; games; photo album (from which you can quickly set wallpapers); FM radio; calendar events; digital clock; world clock; today's date; and birthday list (so you can view contacts' birthdays). In addition, the panel that contains your mobile network operator's' logo onscreen can also be dragged on and off the display, just like the other widgets.
You don't have to have all widgets displayed in the toolbar. To make it quicker to scroll through the list of applications available in the widgets toolbar, you can customise it to contain only the apps and features you want to see (see below).
It's easy to use the widgets once you get them onscreen. Some of them, like the clock and calendar alerts, are passive, only allowing you to see information from the phone, but others like the music player, radio and photo album widgets enable you to operate the functions quickly and easily, direct from the standby screen.
How to set up widgets
- In the standby screen, press the arrowed tab towards the bottom of the display (just above the dial button) (Figure 1).
- A widgets toolbar will open (Figure 2). In the toolbar, there is a column of icons representing the widgets available. You can scroll up or down the list by pressing your finger on the toolbar and moving it gradually up or down, or by swiping up or down with a flick of your finger (Figure 3).
- Choose the widget you want to install onscreen. Press the appropriate icon in the widgets toolbar with your finger and, keeping your finger on the screen, drag it onto the main part of the display. Take off your finger to drop it in position, and a larger panel will appear onscreen (Figure 4).
- You can select as many widgets you like to place onscreen (Figure 5), and rearrange the order at any time, simply by dragging them with your finger on the screen into the position you want (Figure 6).
- If you want to remove a widget from the standby screen, simply put your finger on it and drag it back onto the widgets toolbar.
- Once you have placed the widgets you want onscreen, you can close the widgets toolbar by pressing the arrowed tab at the bottom of the toolbar. The toolbar disappears and your selected widgets remain onscreen (Figure 7).
You can change around widgets as much as you like, as they stay in the toolbar when not onscreen. Some, like the music player and radio will appear on the standby screen automatically when the application is active in the background (Figure 8). You can easily remove these from the standby screen by opening the widgets toolbar as above and dragging the widgets into the toolbar.
Customising your widgets
Out of the box, the Samsung Tocco is set up so that all of its widgets are available in the widgets toolbar. While this is handy while you try out various widgets on your standby screen for usefulness, to make it quicker and easier to scroll through the widgets in the toolbar you may want to customise the toolbar to show only the widgets you use.
To do this, you can go into the Tocco's settings menus and switch off the widgets you don't want to appear. You can easily go back and switch them on in the same way again, if you decide later that you might want to use them.
- From the standby screen, press Menu (Figure 1).
- In the main menu, press Settings (Figure 9).
- In the Settings menu, press Display and light settings (Figure 10).
- In the Display and light settings menu, press Display settings (Figure 11).
- In the Display settings menu, press Widget (Figure 12).
- You are now presented with a list of widgets you can have on your standby screen (Figure 13). The ticked boxes represent the widgets currently available in the toolbar or which are onscreen. Unticked boxes will not appear in the toolbar or onscreen.
- To untick (or re-tick) boxes, simply tap the panel or panels you want to change (Figure 14). Note, you'll need to scroll down the page by using your fingertip see some of the widgets at the bottom of the widget menu.
- Once you have ticked or unticked boxes, press the Save button. A message appears confirming that the changes have been made, and you are returned to the Display settings menu. Press the Call End button twice to get back to the standby screen.
