FSA launches iPhone Salt app

Salt is a new iPhone app from the FSA to advise us on salt content of foods and ways to reduce intake

In a bid to raise public awareness about the levels of salt in our food, the FSA has launched a new iPhone app on the iTunes store.

FSA Salt, as it is cunningly titled, does exactly what you'd expect it to; gives sensible salt intake advice, through the use of the well established traffic light system.

You simply enter the levels of salt (per 100g) stated on the label and the weight of the serving and the app then gives its advice; green indicates a healthier, low salt option and foods high in salt attract a red light, and the advice to “enjoy once in a while or as a treat”.

FSA Salt also includes information on the recommended daily intake for children, as well as providing tips on reducing intake.

Not wanting to restrict its user base to the Apple-brigade, the app is also accessible from any browser-equipped mobile by visiting www.food.gov.uk/saltapp.

For iPhone and iPod Touch owners, FSA Salt is available to download now for free - ensuring that you can work out exactly how bad those two chocolate bars and packet of crisps that you ate at lunch are for your body.
