We review Avatar Creator for the iPhone, an application to help you represent your friends in cartoon goodness
Published on Oct 30, 2009
Many gaming consoles these days allow you to create a digital cartoon avatar of yourself to represent you and what you look like in digital space.
Whether it's Nintendo's Mii or Microsoft's Xbox Live Avatars, such an idea is a good way of bringing a touch of personalisation to your interface.
Avatar Creator now brings that same idea to the iPhone. You can create avatars that represent you or your friends that will appear when they call you.
With an app like this, the most important quality it needs to own is a strong diversity in the avatar creation options. This is a department in which Avatar Creator doesn't fall short.
When the app opens up you're presented with the choice of making either a male or female avatar.
Next, an interface hint tells you that a swipe across your avatar in progress will cycle through the facial feature that you're currently working on.
This interface touch is both intuitive and easy to use. The list of facial features includes, eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips, facial hair, hair, head shape and facial definition.
Many of these features such as hair and eyes can also be adjusted in a decent range of colours.
Skin colour can also be changed to suit your needs. Each part has an impressive selection from which to choose so you're bound to find the right combination of parts to make a characature anyone you fancy.
Accessories are also included in the way of glasses though there aren't as many as we would have liked.
As if this wide selection of parts and colours wasn't though, you can also customise each individual part. The app will let you change the size, angle position (on both the X and Y axis) of a part.
For features such as eyes or eyebrows you can even adjust the distance between them. The result is an incredibly dynamic avatar creator that will be able to make a cartoon likeness out of just about anyone.
Once you're happy with your avatar you can set it to appear with incoming calls or add it to a cartoon scene, a selection of which has been bundled with the app.
You can save your work to a gallery for later browsing and editing. The only downside we could see of the app is that making an avatar for all your contacts would take a good deal of time.
However, Avatar creator does what it does very well and is definitely worth a look for anyone that enjoys making cartoon likenesses.
